Plover made a face. ‘I’d rather have a trench coat than something turquoise.’

‘Certainly sir. You’ll be a forty-two regular I imagine, won’t you, sir?’

‘I’m a forty mate.’

‘You have to go up a size for overgarments, I think, sir.’

Plover tried on the trench coat. It flapped about agreeably, with enormous lapels, buttons and a big belt. It made him feel like Humphrey Bogart.

‘Um. Perhaps sir would like a hat with that?’

Back in the street, Bob Plover’s new trench coat billowed behind him as he ran. He had spent longer in Harrods than he had intended – it had taken him a while to choose the right fedora – and now he was afraid he might have missed his target’s return to his car. Plover found it easier to think of him as the target, rather than Lance. It kept him professional.
